Music industry update | Ontario, Canada | Indie artist, Brendan Scott Friel

I hate that I have to be the only one saying this here, and I hate to have to do it, but I’m sick of listening to smut every time I turn on the radio. I'm tired of listening to rape music. If I wanted smut I’d go back to my childhood bedroom and fish out my old novels with dodgy characters like Master Bates and Seamen Staines and read them till I fall asleep with a picture of Justin Bieber eating a Popsicle. I don’t know why he’s eating a Popsicle okay, that’s just the image I had in my head when I wrote this.

I mean I love sex, but God damn it! I don’t wanna hear it on the radio!

But you know what really gets me? It's the sound of grown men moaning in my ear at the beginning of every verse and every song. I don’t wanna hear that sh*t anymore, in fact I retired all my Biggie Smalls CDs when I realised he was doing it so much. In this new era of rape music (oops!! I mean rap music), it has taken on a new meaning now for me, and I don’t wanna hear it anymore. “Uuungh, uungh”, or like Rick Ross “Ooofff Ooofff”. What the F* is about to happen here is what anyone with a discerning mind would think right? I'm not getting baby batter in my ears on a Thursday morning on my way to work, that’s just disgusting. No more rape music for me, I’m sick of it. To be honest with you, I still have a really soft spot for female rappers and I’d totally still let Cardi B stick her filthy disgusting tongue in my ear and make any sound she likes – but only for 3 minutes though. And then I’ll push her away, slap her in disgust and tell her “I’m rich bitch, don’t you EVER stick your tongue in my ear again”. I don’t know why I would say that, but again, that’s just what I pictured myself saying in my head when I wrote this.

As I’m sure you can tell, a lot of stuff goes through my head when I’m writing, not just sex stuff. I’m a really deep thinker, in fact by the end of this article you would have discovered an amazing music collective and something new that you never expected to know in this lifetime. Okay maybe it won’t be that spectacular but I’ll make sure you learn something new and exciting for reading this far mkay? The catch is I won’t tell you when I’ve told you, you’ll just feel like you know stuff at the end of the article if you learn what I’m going to teach you. In fact I might have even written it already but I’m not telling. Nobody reads anymore, so you are really special and hence you deserve a little reward for your thirst for knowledge in this highly intelligent and sophisticated universe we live in that’s built entirely on thoughts and ideas.

Now where were we? Ahh, yes, rape music, oops!! again, I mean rap… and deep thinking. Mn hmnn, let’s continue. Nowadays I refuse to let ambiguous thoughts into my head, they’re a recipe for a bad prayer, and in these difficult and uncertain times we are living in the last thing anyone wants is for God to finally answer their prayer and give them the exact opposite of what they asked for because they weren't clear and specific about what they wanted. You said you wanted a really bad b*tch, now you’ve got one and guess what? She's gorgeous, but she’s also made babies with everybody you know and you just found out she does cocaine and has been selling the sperm from your used condoms at the sperm bank when you fall asleep after sex at night. Yep! That’s pretty much what you’d expect of a really bad bitch.

So I've stopped using words like “fire” to describe things that are amazing - I just say amazing. And I don't watch men's sports anymore. If Jesus comes back today and asks what I was doing on Friday evening before going to the club I refuse to tell him I went out to the Sports Bar to drink beer and watch many grown men play with balls and roll around on a grass field - he might totally get the wrong idea, he-he-he.

That’s why I never wear ripped or dirty jeans too, I’ve never been a bum, why the F* would I want to dress like one? That’s totally insane to me. I know we’ve strayed a little bit from the music news you and I are both here to explore but I just wanted to get that stuff off my mind first, I write better when my mind is clear. I’m so glad I did, I’m good now. Let’s go.

They've been hailed as the best thing since interdental brushes; and Canada’s exciting soul music collective Soul Music City Co-op is continuing to expand and bring exciting soul music back to centre stage where it belongs as the music industry changes and strays wildly from the organic soulful sounds that are at the very core of its foundation. Headed by Mike Hargreaves, an independent soul singer songwriter from Windsor, Ontario who was formerly known as Soul Brother Mike, the highly selective and sophisticated music outfit, which currently has 8 amazing singer songwriters on its roster was formed just over 3 years ago, back in January 2020. Soul Music City Co-op offers an alternative model to that of the traditional record label and artists retain 100% of their earnings. This week they announced that they are looking for their next big act, and they are inviting artists in and around Windsor, Ontario, Canada to get in touch. The music submission link is available below.

Thanks for reading. Do you feel that feeling of enlightenment I promised you? I know you do, in fact I feel it too. Now go on out there into the world and be somebody! See you tomorrow.

Music industry update | California, USA | Indie artist, Ava Lemert

The good times we’ve all missed so badly are slowly returning. It’s time for us to get our oldest looking, dustiest sneakers; our tightest, most torn jeans and our dirtiest t-shirts with the most holes; and head out again as many nights as possible every week to paint the town red and load our bodies with toxic chemicals that make us feel so good, too good even sometimes - so good, in fact that some people may feel the urge to hug a toilet bowl afterwards while moaning, groaning, doing dirty things to it, calling it God and making promises they'll never keep. No one likes to feel that "good" obviously, so let's be moderate as we all emerge from hiding ey? wink, wink.

Yes, live music is back; clubbing is back; and our favorite watering holes are pouring out liquor again. You are not dreaming, slap yourself two times and see if it hurts. Now twist your nipples really hard and then pull suddenly while snapping your fingers, and see if that hurts. See?

A crowd favorite at some of California’s top live soul music venues, Ava Lemert is an artist whose music is perfect for these unprecedented times. Smooth, calming and easy on the ears, her songs set the perfect mood for those who like to take life easy and sip their wine really slowly. Located on Fair Oak Boulevard in Sacramento,  Ettore’s is one of the various venues she frequents. They hosted a few outdoor, socially distanced gigs during the heat of the pandemic but they are slowly getting back to full capacity again. A few weeks back, Ava announced a series of live dates at the elegant California entertainment and dining venue beginning on the 21st of August at 6:30 PM. Concert tickets, subsequent live dates and venue information are available on the Skunk Radio Live Events platform.

IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION

Indie Music Press Releases (September 2021) - Discover the best emerging, underground & upcoming Soul artists, bands & labels with news updates announcing the latest music releases, live events/gigs, concert/tour dates, & other entertainment stories, articles & headlines from your favorite indie Soul performers & entertainers daily on SRL News.
Music industry update | Ontario, Canada | Indie artist, Crissi Cochrane

Education is a controversial subject for many youngsters and even adults as well who are either flunking really hard or dreading the massive loans they’ve heard about while considering furthering their studies. It is also a controversial topic for various other groups of people, as well as individuals, who simply believe they can get by without it – which may be true for some, or even many, depending on the circumstances. But fundamentally, education is the key to success in any field of work; and as the old saying goes – knowledge is never wasted, no matter how useless it may seem at the time of acquiring it. But that’s just fundamentally speaking – in reality, anyone can do whatever they like as long as they are happy to deal with the consequences that come with their choices. So let’s just say education is a good thing for now and leave it at that – no one’s judging anyone here.

This week Ontario, Canada's Nova Scotia Community College alumni published an article about one of their prides and joys - critically acclaimed singer songwriter Crissi Cochrane, a graduate of the college who studied Music Business and is now doing amazing things independently and making waves  nationally in the music industry.

This is not an article geared towards inspiring you to study Music Business and become a successful singer songwriter all on your own, it's really hard - you need to be really awesome at singing and songwriting as well for that, even after mastering the business. You also need to play the guitar like it’s a really cute baby with a full diaper that mustn’t spill, and you’ve got to look and sound really smooth too while you are doing it every single time, no matter what's on your mind, how many times you've sung the darn song, whether you've slept or eaten, or whether you've been paid yet. Just kiddin’, the world is yours, you don’t need to meet any requirements whatsoever, just do what comes naturally and makes you happy; and if you have to break any rules along the way, make sure you don’t get caught. Don’t break the law obviously, that’s not cool – wait, you mean you didn’t know rules and laws were two completely separate things that are similar but not the same? – See? Education!

Things seem like they are starting to pick up again in the music industry as live music venues, concert halls, pubs, bars, restaurants, community halls and other entertainment venues open their doors and start to welcome customers once again. It’s been over 12 months since many musicians and bands played live on stage, and 12 months since music fans got a chance to see their favorite acts live in person, so this is a beautiful moment in the history of music, in fact it could prove to be one of the most exciting moments in the industry in recent times. This week, Windsor, Ontario singer songwriter Crissi Cochrane announced another series of new concert dates, after recently returning to performing live just over 2 weeks back. The first gig was at Downtown Windsor Farmers Market on Saturday, the 14th of August at 11:30 AM. Full list of concert dates, tickets and venues are available on the Skunk Radio Live Events page.

Music industry update | Ontario, Canada | Indie artist, Crissi Cochrane

A few months ago, Crissi Cochrane joined Patreon as many artists have been doing since the advent of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, which has forced live music venues to close and stripped musicians of a very crucial source of income. Fans have been quick to support the independent Ontario sensation, who has been doing well to keep soul music in its most intrinsic form alive for just under a decade now. They have been rewarded handsomely for their support every step of the way.

Every month, Crissi has something fresh, new and exciting for her Patreon subscribers – unreleased songs, exclusive music videos, live performance videos, live stream concerts and all sorts of goodies that are guaranteed to put smiles on faces every single time. On the 24th of March she released a new song titled “The Game”. Her Patreon supporters were first to see the live performance video of the record a week prior to its official release date. If you missed it you can watch it below, and if you have seen it already you can also watch it again (and again and again) below - so she can rack up some of that good ol' YouTube advertisement revenue that content creators need more so than ever before during these trying times. Don't forget to share it as well.

So wait - you may be thinking, maybe even scratching your head as well; why the grossly misleading headline? You probably thought you would be elbow-deep in some fresh new Snoop Doggy Dog or be reading about some exciting American pimps and hoes doing amazing things with ping-pong balls by now didn't you? He-he-he.  Sometimes we just like to have fun with titles, also, it seemed like it would be a good way to segue you into what you are about to read now. Buy the record! Good music is to be sold for big big bucks, not streamed for shillings on Spotify Premium. Wait, you've got premium at least right? You're not still using the free ad-supported version are you? If you are; yuk, yuk, yuk; upgrade now... or else.

Music industry update | Ontario, Canada | Indie artist, Max Marshall

Have you heard about the new Canadian music collective that is shaking things up in the world of soul music? If you have then you are in for a treat, if you haven’t you are in for a double treat. Well, Soul Music City Coop, the Ontario collective that is not only keeping soul music alive but is going a step further and ever so gently pushing its boundaries and spicing the genre up in ways never been done before, is growing and getting even more exciting than what its newly established and rapidly-growing fan base could have ever imagined or even wished for in their wildest musical fantasies - what!? you don't have any musical fantasies? And no, meeting Rihanna backstage after a concert and way too much molly, and making out for an hour is not what we're talking about right now; although that would be pretty darn cool - I'd totally wet my pants and be fine with it. For example, imagine if Miley Cyrus crashed your birthday party by literally crashing through the walls naked on a wrecking ball and then proceeded to perform your favorite song naked over a live beat by Bach, Beethoven, Timbaland, Mike Will Made This, Kanye West and Swizz Beatz while Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa smoked weed and played the bongos quietly in the background - no making out involved here at all, and certainly no sorority sisters who can't pay for the pizza delivery they ordered, see how that's different? No? Moving on...

After the recent addition of Ayola back in the summer of 2020 during the heat of the infamous pandemic lockdowns that we’ll never be able to forget, the collective added another exciting new member, Max Marshall on the 19th of March. The collective describes him as a “one-of-a-kind finger-style folk guitarist with deep roots and biting words”. He’s from Essex County and plays a bluesy blend of country, folk and soul. So what’s his deal? Well stick around and let’s find out. Scroll down and start by listening to some of his top tracks in the music player. New music, news updates, concert tickets, behind the scenes clips, tour dates and more will be provided here as they become available.

The Coronavirus pandemic has hit every sector of the world’s economies where it hurts really bad and is leaving many businesses in disarray. The hospitality and entertainment industries in particular seem to have taken the biggest blows because they often come under the “non-essential business” categories during lockdown scenarios - which means they are usually the first to be forced to close and the last to be allowed to re-open when lockdown restrictions are lifted. Musicians, bands and entertainers have all had to get creative in the way they generate revenue, keep in close contact with their fans and get their new content out there. Live streaming, socially distanced open-air events, merchandising, busking and podcasting are just some of the avenues many musicians have taken to during the pandemic, and fans are supporting in any ways they can. Other avenues like crowdfunding sites are also proving to be invaluable in these dire times. Sites like Patreon and Indiegogo are being used by musicians to raise funds for their future projects and also fund ongoing operations. This week, independent Ontario soul music star, Crissi Cochrane announced the launch of her first Patreon campaign, which offers fans access to previously unheard and unreleased music every month in addition to other exciting perks. Behind every great song there is a story and more often than not countless hours of hard work. Writing, recording, re-writing, re-recording, mixing, re-mixing, thinking, re-thinking, imagining, re-imagining; and then at some point, when there is nothing left to be tweaked, that final moment of closure and acceptance, without which no song would ever exist. Somewhere along the line there would also be a cover artwork design in the works; whether before, during or after. Every artist has their process - no two are ever alike, and likewise every song. So what was the story behind the beautiful cover artwork of the amazing new single, “Can We Go Back” by emerging Canadian soul music sensation, Crissi Cochrane? Music industry update | Ontario, Canada | Indie artist, Crissi Cochrane

Windsor’s pride, critically acclaimed emerging singer songwriter, Crissi Cochrane is hitting all the right notes with her latest single, “Can We Go Back”. Originally due in stores back in June, the release was postponed owing to the social unrest that ensued as a result of racial inequality, police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, which were making headlines at the time following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA and the ripple effects it had all over the world. In a blog post, the fast-rising Ontario star said she feared the lyrics of the song might have been misinterpreted and she was even considering changing them ahead of its new release date, which she speculated could be sometime in September. The track was eventually released on the 14th of August. It received and continues to receive an amazing response from Canadian soul music fans and critics; radio, press and television networks; and music industry insiders, many of whom have supported and watched closely since the release of “Pretty Words”, which went viral with over 5 million plays on Spotify back in 2016 and made her one of the most successful fully independent Canadian soul musicians of all time.
