Patreon has brought much joy to musicians all over the world over the past couple of years as a supplementary source of income, but it has also brought a lot of joy to music fans as well, as a way for musicians to reward their loyalty and their support. Canadian singer songwriter Crissi Cochrane has been using the American membership platform which provides business tools for content creators since around the advent of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic; and the results have been outstanding. Fans have been treated to loads of goodies every step of the way – everything from live streaming concerts and live performance videos to exclusive music videos, exclusive songs and EPs and early access to new content. This week she announced yet another treat for her patrons - exclusive access to the live recording of a track titled “Midnight Wind” at a rehearsal back in 2020. The record was featured on her critically acclaimed February 2020 album “Heirloom”.

Education is a controversial subject for many youngsters and even adults as well who are either flunking really hard or dreading the massive loans they’ve heard about while considering furthering their studies. It is also a controversial topic for various other groups of people, as well as individuals, who simply believe they can get by without it – which may be true for some, or even many, depending on the circumstances. But fundamentally, education is the key to success in any field of work; and as the old saying goes – knowledge is never wasted, no matter how useless it may seem at the time of acquiring it. But that’s just fundamentally speaking – in reality, anyone can do whatever they like as long as they are happy to deal with the consequences that come with their choices. So let’s just say education is a good thing for now and leave it at that – no one’s judging anyone here. 

This week Ontario, Canada's Nova Scotia Community College alumni published an article about one of their prides and joys - critically acclaimed singer songwriter Crissi Cochrane, a graduate of the college who studied Music Business and is now doing amazing things independently and making waves  nationally in the music industry.

This is not an article geared towards inspiring you to study Music Business and become a successful singer songwriter all on your own, it's really hard - you need to be really awesome at singing and songwriting as well for that, even after mastering the business. You also need to play the guitar like it’s a really cute baby with a full diaper that mustn’t spill, and you’ve got to look and sound really smooth too while you are doing it every single time, no matter what's on your mind, how many times you've sung the darn song, whether you've slept or eaten, or whether you've been paid yet. Just kiddin’, the world is yours, you don’t need to meet any requirements whatsoever, just do what comes naturally and makes you happy; and if you have to break any rules along the way, make sure you don’t get caught. Don’t break the law obviously, that’s not cool – wait, you mean you didn’t know rules and laws were two completely separate things that are similar but not the same? – See? Education!

Things seem like they are starting to pick up again in the music industry as live music venues, concert halls, pubs, bars, restaurants, community halls and other entertainment venues open their doors and start to welcome customers once again. It’s been over 12 months since many musicians and bands played live on stage, and 12 months since music fans got a chance to see their favorite acts live in person, so this is a beautiful moment in the history of music, in fact it could prove to be one of the most exciting moments in the industry in recent times. This week, Windsor, Ontario singer songwriter Crissi Cochrane announced another series of new concert dates, after recently returning to performing live just over 2 weeks back. A few months ago, Crissi Cochrane joined Patreon as many artists have been doing since the advent of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, which has forced live music venues to close and stripped musicians of a very crucial source of income. Fans have been quick to support the independent Ontario sensation, who has been doing well to keep soul music in its most intrinsic form alive for just under a decade now. They have been rewarded handsomely for their support every step of the way. 

Every month, Crissi has something fresh, new and exciting for her Patreon subscribers – unreleased songs, exclusive music videos, live performance videos, live stream concerts and all sorts of goodies that are guaranteed to put smiles on faces every single time. On the 24th of March she released a new song titled “The Game”. Her Patreon supporters were first to see the live performance video of the record a week prior to its official release date. The Coronavirus pandemic has hit every sector of the world’s economies where it hurts really bad and is leaving many businesses in disarray. The hospitality and entertainment industries in particular seem to have taken the biggest blows because they often come under the “non-essential business” categories during lockdown scenarios - which means they are usually the first to be forced to close and the last to be allowed to re-open when lockdown restrictions are lifted. Musicians, bands and entertainers have all had to get creative in the way they generate revenue, keep in close contact with their fans and get their new content out there. Windsor’s pride, critically acclaimed emerging singer songwriter, Crissi Cochrane is hitting all the right notes with her latest single, “Can We Go Back”. Originally due in stores back in June, the release was postponed owing to the social unrest that ensued as a result of racial inequality, police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, which were making headlines at the time following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA and the ripple effects it had all over the world. In a blog post, the fast-rising Ontario star said she feared the lyrics of the song might have been misinterpreted and she was even considering changing them ahead of its new release date, which she speculated could be sometime in September. The track was eventually released on the 14th of August. It received and continues to receive an amazing response from Canadian soul music fans and critics; radio, press and television networks; and music industry insiders, many of whom have supported and watched closely since the release of “Pretty Words”, which went viral with over 5 million plays on Spotify back in 2016 and made her one of the most successful fully independent Canadian soul musicians of all time. “Get Collected” was an exciting music podcast hosted by Crissi Cochrane and husband, Soul Brother Mike a few years back. The twice-weekly podcast covered music industry related topics, and social and political matters, as well as answered questions and discussed issues surrounding the two musicians’ careers and endeavours. Sadly, the podcast came to an end on the 10th of December, 2017 after Season 5 Episode 7. A new podcast titled Soul City Music Co-op was launched on the 6th of July, 2020. The one hour podcast features replays and highlights from Ontario soul music collective, Soul City Music Co-op’s weekly virtual concerts. It is hosted by Crissi Cochrane, a member of the co-op, which was formed by Soul Brother Mike back in January and consists of 7 members – The Family Soul, Crissi Cochrane, The Bishop Boys, Brendan Scott Friel, Dane Roberts, Madeline Doornaert and Soul Brother Mike. Originally scheduled for the 17th of July, 2020, the released of Crissi Cochrane’s forthcoming single, “Can We Go Back” has been postponed. In a recent blog post the critically acclaimed emerging Canadian soul music star explained that she didn’t want the song to be misunderstood or to send a message that undermines or conflicts with any of the causes being addressed by the ongoing “Black Lives Matter” movement, and she is even considering changing the lyrics. The track is now expected in stores sometime in September. In the meantime, Crissi is still gigging actively online as she has done since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and the worldwide lockdowns that ensued back in March. Crissi Cochrane’s latest album “Heirloom” was released to critical acclaim on the 29th of February, just over a month after the first single from the album, “Hungry Love”. Defying every expectation and leaving critics as well as die-hard soul music fans lost for words, and even in a state of shock in many cases, “Heirloom” was anticipated to be the record that would catapult the independent Ontario soul music star to global superstardom. Critics remain optimistic as the album spreads like wild fire across Canada.

A household name in Windsor, Crissi has been a popular face on local television and radio, and in the press as well since her critically acclaimed single, “Pretty Words” defied every expectation of what an indie artist could achieve completely independently and was streamed over 5 million times on Spotify and YouTube within a few weeks of its release back in 2016. It still remains one of the top independent soul records of all time and probably will for a very long time.

Independent Canadian soul music star, Crissi Cochrane started writing custom love songs for Valentine’s Day a few years ago. They have become such a big hit locally and by far one of the most exciting gifts to give, and she now writes custom songs on those rare occasions when her schedule opens up for whatever reason. Sadly, due to Coronavirus restrictions she recently announced that several of her upcoming gigs have been cancelled. Like most, if not all musicians are doing post Covid-19, Ontario’s soul music collective Soul City Music Co-op has started streaming their concerts live online. They play on Thursdays and Saturdays at 9 PM Eastern Time, and are already doing well to keep Windsor’s quarantined population happy. The brainchild of Soul Brother Mike, husband of critically acclaimed independent soul music star, singer songwriter Crissi Cochrane, the Soul City Music Co-op was established just over a month ago to foster the careers of Ontario’s top independent artists. The collective currently consists of 6 local acts including Crissi and Mike. Their first online gig was on the 22nd of March and they'll be playing every week for the foreseeable future.
