Music industry update | Michigan, USA | Indie artist, Wiz Kid The Weirdo

The music industry has become grossly overcompetitive and subsequently, or rather, consequently overcrowded over the past decade; and hip hop seems to be the genre that has taken the biggest hit (pun intended) in that aspect.

With record labels competing for the almighty "market share" in the “Spotify” era of music, artists are springing up left right and center and more often than not, they are not only rapping and singing but also rap-singing - a style of music that is yet to be categorized because no one knows exactly what it is and how to tell if an artist is doing it or actually singing and not doing a very good job of it. Have you ever listened to a pop or R&B record in which the singer doesn’t hit one single high note, conveys less emotions than someone suffering from a severe case of Alexithymia and shows no evidence of any vocal range whatsoever? Of course you have. If you’ve ever heard a Drake record then you have an idea of what is being said here. That’s not to say Drake has no vocal range but let’s face it everyone knows he’s not a real singer; he just makes really good dance songs and that’s all that matters in the business of music, whether critics like it or not. In fact, if Drake made a song and only said “Ungh” (sounding like a young Biggie Smalls that hasn't eaten for days, he-he-he - wait, hunger is not funny; stop laughing, not cool), like he always does before starting another monotonous, melancholic and mentally draining verse about how everybody hates and underappreciates him; it’ll probably get as many streams as any of his other songs, simply because "it’s Drake". Wait, this article is starting to seem like another “we hate Drake” article, which he loves to sing about and respond to in interviews; so let’s move on. Last thing the world needs is another Drake song about how amazing he is and how no one will give him his props or even acknowledge how hard he is working – helloooo!!! literally everyone in the world is going through exactly that. Oh wait, that must be why he sells, that explains it. Way to waist a paragraph ey? Oh well, moving on…

On the 13th of June, after a long time away from the spotlight since around the advent of Covid, Detroit, Michigan underground rapper Wiz Kid The Weirdo resurfaced with a new record titled “One For The Team”. The track came just over a year after his last song “iSing”, which was released back in May 2020. He is not one to release music everyday but every release means something to his loyal and steady-growing fan base, and it's very easy to tell it means something to him as well. This week he returned with news about another new record which is now in the final stages of production and due to be released soon. He also released a sneak preview in the form of a live performance video of the track. [Watch sneak preview below].
