NEW DAY

Bienne is a small town on the language boundary between French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland. The German name of for the town is Biel, while Bienne is the French name. It has been popular for watchmaking since the 19th century. Folk and religious music dominated the Swiss region from around the 17th century but other genres slowly became popular starting with the style of singing known as yodeling in the 1830s, then pop, rock, progressive and metal in the mid-1900s, and of course hip hop in the '90s. Schlager, a style of popular music that is common in Northern and Central Europe is also big on the Swiss music scene. Switzerland is now home to some of the world's biggest music festivals and music events including the Lucerne Festival, Nox Illuminata, Verbier Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival.

This week on the SRL Auditions we had the pleasure of exploring the discography of a talented new music composer from Bienne who goes by the name of Gianfranco GFN. Gianfranco plays the guitar in a variety of styles including jazz, blues, bossa and funk. His first record, "Linea", a 17 track instrumental album was released back in 2011 and he has followed with other exciting records which have received and continue to receive the support of local and national Swiss radio stations. We also had the pleasure of listening to the critically acclaimed record, "New Day", one of the popular tracks from his latest album, "Ca'Giazz, which was released back April 2019. Voting is still open.
