Music industry update | Band member of The Swinging Chads and Elvis Presley |
Back in the good old days when
music was music - as the old-timers would say, bands weren't afraid to try new things. In fact, trying new things and coming out with a totally new
sound that had never been heard before was the way to go for any new artist or band that wanted to be successful in the music business, and following existing trends was a sure way to either fail on be ranked in a category below whoever the pioneer of the sound was and pretty much anyone else who followed immediately after. Sadly the opposite seems to be the case nowadays - following existing trends and putting a subtle twist on it no matter how little seems to be a more guaranteed way to get on the
radio and on the charts than doing something original and fresh that has never been done before, at least that's the way it would seem to the average music fan who is constantly being bombarded with what only seems like remixes of whatever is already trending. Before mainstream music got so expensive to manage and promote, before rap artists (Puff Daddy and Ma$e - not to point the finger or anything) started spending a million dollars on
music videos and blowing massive holes in their record labels' pockets before their albums even got released, breaking all the rules and going out on a limb was the way to go and no one wanted to sound like anyone else. It made listening to new artists and bands a lot more rewarding than it is today in a music industry that is not ready to take any risks investing in anything that doesn't already have an existing fan base that is ready to buy - but who can blame them? Fans stopped buying music like they used to once they realised they could get it for free on the Internet if they waited long enough for one person to buy it an share it. It was around about the time when rap music started getting frequent airplay on mainstream radio stations. When Michael Jackson started having one too many sleep overs with kids and turning from a young black man into an old white lady. When the White House started reeking of really good marijuana that wasn't being inhaled and interns were taking on the president's chopper while Saddam Hussein was swimming in oil and not sharing it. When Mike Tyson started hanging out with Bobby Brown, giving ladies fellatio without consent and threatening to eat people's kids. It was a decade to remember, at least so we've heard. No one knows who's to blame or what happened but luckily, there are still bands, mostly outside of the mainstream that are not afraid to blaze a trail and explore the unknown depths of their genre. One of such bands is an exciting americana act from California called The Swinging Chads. This week on the SRL Networks Auditions we had the great pleasure of delving into their repertoire, which dates as far back as 2010 and listening to some of their latest releases, including the critically acclaimed single, "Blue Sunshine" which was released back in 2017. Voting is still open.
